Over
70% of North Carolina's 117 Educational districts purchased the
newly released and nationally acclaimed abstinence educational
video tape series, "Everyone Is NOT Doing It." Utilizing first
year Title V federal funds for abstinence education, these school
districts incorporated this innovative series with already existing
curriculum being used by teachers on the subject of abstinence.
Many
of the districts also used part of their Title V funds to bring
in the series producer and national abstinence speaker Mike Long
of Durham, NC. Long trained many of their middle and high school
health and PE teachers, school nurses, and counselors in the area
of "directive education" implementation. Since 1986, Long has
traveled to nearly every state training thousands of educators
and health professionals.
While
in the school districts, Long received standing ovations in assembly
programs and parent conferences. "The response from teens in these
assemblies is overwhelming," Long said. "It's amazing how many
accept the abstinence message when it is presented on their level
without poking a finger in their face. Teens are looking for clear
direction on how to make healthy choices and parents are fully
supporting the school systems utilizing our series."
Long
traveled to 10 states this past Fall and his schedule is rapidly
filling for the Spring. School districts are already lining up
his services for their second year of funding. "There is no question
Title V has created an unprecedented interest and need for abstinence
educational materials, in-service teacher trainings, community
programs, and school assemblies," Long said. "It pleases me that
so many school systems here in my home state are using these funds
as intended. Our teenagers are the winners here!"
Approved
by the NC Dept. of Public Instruction for Title V abstinence grants,
"Everyone Is NOT Doing It" is introduced by legendary basketball
coach Dean Smith with over 200 NC teenagers participating in it.
Parts 1, 2, and 3 run approximately 30 minutes and are designed
to be used as a video resource in the classroom for teens. Part
4 is for parents and teachers explaining what directive education
is and how to implement it successfully in the classroom and at
home.
School
administrators say, "The key is to get a set in the hands of each
teacher so they can use it in conjunction with the teacher manual
of whatever sex education curriculum they may be using."
A
free 12 min. promo tape of the series is available by request
through M.L. Video Productions, Inc., P.O. Box 99487, Raleigh, NC 27624-9487
